Thank you to everyone who attended our community drop-in session on 9 October 2025 at Jubilee Hall. We appreciated your time, questions, and valuable feedback.

Benefits for the Community

The local community can expect to see economic growth driven by new jobs, increased demand for local goods and services, and development in general business support services during the construction period. The proposed project will play an important role in driving down electricity costs for homeowners and consumers by optimising energy distribution and reducing reliance on expensive fossil fuel peaker plants. In addition, our planned community investment program will further support the well-being of the local citizens of the Macedon Shire Ranges Council throughout the project’s lifetime.

MACEDON BATTERY ENERGY STORAGE SYSTEM PROJECT

The proposed Macedon BESS Project is a 100 MW 4-hour Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) that enhances grid stability by providing a bi-directional energy function, helping to smooth out fluctuations and allowing an increased supply of cost-effective clean renewable energy. The Macedon BESS project is expected to charge and discharge stored energy enough to power the equivalent of approximately 35,000 households for a 4-hour discharge cycle.

Located between Macedon-Woodend Road and Calder Freeway, the proposed site is sitting adjacent to the Gisborne Substation. Due to this proximity to the nearby substation, electrical connection would be seamless, reducing the need for building expensive network transmission lines and other capital infrastructures.

In addition to improving network stability, the proposed Macedon BESS Project will allow more solar and wind projects to be connected, joining the nationwide effort to mitigate the risks of climate change by reducing greenhouse gases and carbon emissions. The regional economy is expected to prosper from the development, as business opportunities and tourism flourish throughout the various stages of the project.

Our Vision

Providing definitive and effective actions to answer the global challenges set by climate change. With our passion and innovation, we are committed to the journey towards a cleaner and more sustainable Australia.

We believe in generating and storing clean and renewable energy for the local community that helps in reducing the carbon footprint on the environment. We envision a world where 100% of the energy is generated by renewables, with the aid of energy storage in various locations to balance generation and demand peaks.

At South Energy, we are paving the way for a more sustainable future with our renewable energy projects – such as the proposed Macedon BESS Project, to help secure a bright future for generations to come.
